During the weekend, the Southbound 5 Freeway towards San Diego County becomes heavily congested. With current driving speeds dropping to a slow crawl, there are commitments to widen I-5 from San Juan Creek road to Avenida Pico to help with congestion. Additional projects for the area include closing the gap on La Pata Avenue, which will extend La Pata to connect Ortega Highway to Avenida Pico.
Although the 5 Freeway expansion and the La Pata Avenue Gap Closure addresses some of the congestion in the area, traffic in South Orange County is still projected to increase by a shocking 64% by 2035. This is, in part, due to population growth outpacing infrastructure project development. There are several new projects proposed, intended to help relieve traffic throughout South Orange County, including new approaches to public transportation and connecting the 241 Toll Road to the 5 freeway.
